A short film by Dustin Whitaker

Dark Burdens

Not till the hours of light return...

Synopsis

Somewhere in rural Oregon during the summer of 1990, two teenage best friends, Ashley and Taylor, set out in search of one night away from the weight of home. Instead, they are drawn into the fractured world of Logan, a troubled young man haunted by his family’s past. As the night unfolds and buried truths rise to the surface, each must confront the responsibilities their parents left behind.

In “Prologue,” Ashley and Taylor share a last summer of freedom before everything changes. As the night of Dark Burdens approaches, hidden truths emerge, and the world no longer feels so innocent.

Taylor and Ashley walk the same winding road, their friendship a steady glow against the night. They fill the silence with laughter, with rebellion, with the quiet hope that growing up will be their saviour. But moments in our past reach out like a claw's shadow.

Ashley and Taylor's Mixtape

Logan escaped the wreckage of his family, but the rope still pulls him back. His home, his past, it ties him to a ship already sinking. In a motorhome that once held safety, unfinished work waits. He'll never reach the surface until he lets go.

"Alone" takes place before the night of Dark Burdens. An isolated moment in the world of this short film.

What do you do when all you find in the light is more darkness? When home gives no warmth and even the stars feel distant? We walk that line between collapse and courage, repeating the past or finding the present. The rope is short when those called to protect choose themselves instead. This is a story of putting yourself back together for those who come after. To believe that hope is not in vain, that love bears weight. Through the cracks, light shines into dark spaces. It is during the night that stars shine bright.
